Cloud Routing
Cloud Routing is a utility for connecting networks across locations and providers. It is not a standalone product but a tool that facilitates integrating NetActuate services with other infrastructure — whether at other cloud providers, in colocation facilities, or at a home or office network.
Cloud Routing has two components:
- Cloud Routers — individual virtualized router instances that you configure with interfaces, routing, and NAT rules
- Magic Mesh — an automated multi-router mesh network that connects Cloud Routers together with encrypted tunnels and iBGP, with no manual configuration required
Pricing
Cloud Routers are billed as the underlying VM cost only — there is no additional charge for the cloud routing feature itself.
Use Cases
- Multi-provider private networking — connect private networks at different providers (e.g., AWS US East + AWS US West + NetActuate Dallas) over a private mesh
- Cloud on-ramp — establish a BGP session with AWS or another provider through a VLAN cross-connect
- Remote access — connect a home or office network to NetActuate VMs for private access over WireGuard
- Multi-site workload interconnect — route traffic between NetActuate locations without traversing the public internet
Supported Tunnel Types
Cloud Routers support multiple tunnel and interface types for connecting networks:
- WireGuard — encrypted Layer 3 tunnels with modern cryptography and minimal overhead
- GRE — unencrypted tunnels for connecting networks where encryption is handled at another layer
- IPsec — standards-based encrypted tunnels for site-to-site VPN connectivity and interoperability with third-party devices
- Dummy (loopback) — virtual interfaces for service addresses (e.g., anycast IPs)
- Ethernet (VLAN) — tagged interfaces for connecting to Cloud VLANs or cross-connects
Planned Features
- VPC ↔ Cloud Router one-click integration — currently not available; connecting a VPC to a Cloud Router requires coordination with NetActuate support
Related Sections
- Cloud (VPC) — isolated private cloud environments
- BGP — self-service BGP peering for custom routing
