Billing and Sizing
This page explains how Marketplace appliances are sized and what you are billed for. An appliance is a normal NetActuate virtual machine, so it is billed like the infrastructure it runs on, plus bandwidth.
Minimum and Recommended Sizing
Every appliance lists two sizes on its page:
- Minimum is the smallest server the appliance is known to run on. Use it for testing, evaluation, and light workloads.
- Recommended is a production-ready starting point sized for typical traffic.
Each size is expressed as vCPU, RAM, and disk. Pick a size at deploy based on your expected load: for streaming and transcoding, the number of concurrent streams and whether you transcode; for load balancing and caching, connection volume and whether you terminate TLS. You can start at the Minimum to validate and move up, or start at the Recommended size for production.
VPU Acceleration
Some media appliances can use a NETINT VPU (video processing unit) for hardware-accelerated encoding and transcoding. On each appliance page the sizing section states whether a VPU is:
- Not used - the appliance runs on standard CPU sizes.
- An advantage - the appliance benefits from a VPU where one is available, but runs without it.
- Required - the appliance needs a VPU-capable node.
VPU-capable sizes are available at select locations. Choose a VPU-capable size at deploy when the appliance calls for it.
What You Are Billed For
- Infrastructure. You pay for the server size you deploy (vCPU, RAM, and disk), billed like any NetActuate virtual machine.
- Bandwidth. Edge egress is metered per GB.
- Software license (BYOL only). For bring-your-own-license appliances, the software license is billed separately by the software vendor. NetActuate bills only the infrastructure and bandwidth; you supply the license key at deploy.
Open-source and free appliances have no software license fee. You pay only for the infrastructure and bandwidth.
License Models
| Model | You pay NetActuate for | You pay the vendor for |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Infrastructure and bandwidth | Nothing (open source) |
| BYOL | Infrastructure and bandwidth | The software license |
| Trial | Infrastructure and bandwidth | Nothing during the trial |
