Designing for Platform Resilience in an Unpredictable World

July 29, 2026

Major cloud and infrastructure outages are becoming more common and their causes more diverse. Platform engineering teams must assume failures will occur and design resilience across multiple layers to reduce blast radius and accelerate recovery.

This paper examines three complimentary approaches to multi-layer resilience:

  • BGP Anycast at the networking layer determines how traffic reaches the nearest viable entry point
  • Authoritative DNS at the mapping layer determines which endpoints are eligible to be returned
  • Traffic steering at the decision layer applies decision logic to select among eligible endpoints using performance, health, and business context

This paper explains how each layer works, the role each plays in delivering resilience, and how coordinated behavior across layers further protects availability and performance.
