MoQ Relay is composable with the Media Substrate, but neither requires the other. A customer already carrying contribution or primary-distribution traffic on the Media Substrate can add the MoQ Relay and run both the protected transport layer and the fan-out layer on one network, under one measurement plane. A customer who only needs relays can run the MoQ Relay on its own.
Media over QUIC Transport is a publish and subscribe protocol that runs over QUIC and WebTransport. It uses the features of those transports, including streams, priorities, datagrams and partial reliability, and it works both point to point and through intermediate relays, which is what lets low-latency delivery scale.
QUIC: A UDP-Based Multiplexed and Secure Transport. QUIC is a popular, general-purpose transport layer network protocol standardized by the IETF to provide faster, more secure, and more reliable connections versus traditional TCP. It operates on top of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) and integrates TLS 1.3 encryption directly into its connection handshake, reducing latency and mitigating head-of-line blocking.
